Does Nutri-Score actually change what people buy?

Somewhat. The larger effect may be on manufacturers reformulating to score better, which is not what the debate is usually about.

What the reviews find

A 2025 systematic review of Nutri-Score effectiveness [1] and a review of front-of-pack labelling impact [4] converge: labels shift purchasing in the intended direction, and the shift is small. Criterion validation work [2] addresses a different and prior question — whether the algorithm ranks foods the way nutritional science would — and the answer is broadly yes, with known edge cases.

The dietary indices underlying these systems have also been scrutinised [3], which matters because a profiling algorithm encodes contestable judgements about which nutrients to weight.

Front-of-pack labelling effects

The known edge cases

Critics point to olive oil, nuts and cheese scoring worse than intuition suggests, and to some diet drinks scoring well. Some of this is fair and some misunderstands the design: Nutri-Score compares within categories on a per-100 g basis and is not a verdict on whether a food belongs in a healthy diet.

Recent algorithm revisions addressed several of these cases. The deeper point stands: a single letter cannot encode everything about a food, and treating it as if it does is a misuse rather than a flaw.

What a health claim legally means

In the EU, nutrition and health claims are regulated: only authorised claims with an accepted evidence base may appear, and each is tied to specific conditions of use. "Contributes to normal immune function" is a licensed phrase with a defined basis, not marketing prose.

What is not regulated is everything surrounding it — imagery, provenance language, and terms like "natural" or "wholesome". The regulated claim is often the least misleading statement on the packet.

Common questions

Is Nutri-Score accurate?
Validation work finds it ranks foods broadly in line with nutritional quality [2], with edge cases and revisions.
Why does olive oil score badly?
It is energy-dense and scored per 100 g. The system compares within categories rather than declaring foods good or bad.
Do labels change behaviour?
Modestly [1][4]. Reformulation may be the larger effect.
Should Nutri-Score be mandatory in the EU?
A political question. The evidence supports "it helps a bit and does no harm", which is a weaker case than either camp makes.
