Verandert Nutri-Score daadwerkelijk wat mensen kopen?

Wat de reviews vinden

Een systematische review uit 2025 van de effectiviteit van Nutri-Score [1] en een review van de impact van etikettering aan de voorkant van de verpakking [4] komen overeen: etiketten verschuiven aankopen in de beoogde richting, en de verschuiving is klein. Het criteriumvalidatiewerk [2] behandelt een andere en eerdere vraag — of het algoritme voedingsmiddelen rangschikt zoals de voedingswetenschap zou doen — en het antwoord is in grote lijnen ja, met bekende uitzonderingen.

De dieetindices die ten grondslag liggen aan deze systemen zijn ook onder de loep genomen [3], wat belangrijk is omdat een profileringsalgoritme betwistbare oordelen encodeert over welke voedingsstoffen gewogen moeten worden.

De bekende uitzonderingen

Critici wijzen op olijfolie, noten en kaas die slechter scoren dan de intuïtie suggereert, en op sommige dieetdranken die goed scoren. Een deel hiervan is eerlijk en een deel begrijpt het ontwerp verkeerd: Nutri-Score vergelijkt binnen categorieën op basis van per 100 g en is geen oordeel over de vraag of een voedingsmiddel in een gezond dieet thuishoort.

Recente algoritmerevisies hebben verschillende van deze gevallen aangepakt. Het diepere punt blijft staan: een enkele letter kan niet alles over een voedingsmiddel coderen, en het behandelen alsof dat wel kan, is een misbruik in plaats van een tekortkoming.

Wat een gezondheidsclaim wettelijk betekent

In de EU zijn voedings- en gezondheidsclaims gereguleerd: alleen geautoriseerde claims met een aanvaard bewijsbasis mogen verschijnen, en elke claim is verbonden aan specifieke gebruiksvoorwaarden. "Draagt bij aan een normale immuunfunctie" is een gelicentieerde zin met een gedefinieerde basis, geen marketingproza.

Wat niet gereguleerd is, is alles daaromheen — beelden, taal over herkomst en termen zoals "natuurlijk" of "gezond". De gereguleerde claim is vaak de minst misleidende verklaring op de verpakking.

Validatiewerk toont aan dat het voedingsmiddelen in grote lijnen rangschikt in overeenstemming met de voedingskwaliteit [2], met uitzonderingen en herzieningen.

Het is energierijk en gescoord per 100 g. Het systeem vergelijkt binnen categorieën in plaats van voedingsmiddelen goed of slecht te verklaren.

Moet Nutri-Score verplicht zijn in de EU?
